Because politics is simply a reason to gamble.
Now would seem an appropriate time to set up a political dead pool for the Rt. Hon. Dr. Gordon Brown. Will he go? Will he stay? Will be both stay and go in an improbable twist of British political proceedings? The drama thickens, the wheel of fortune rolls! Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets, and make them large.

Edit: And the first round of betting goes to Dr Brown. The Historian is not yet History. We'll be waiting for round two. Stay tuned to Mystery Politics Theatre 3000UK.

I am not a heavy Anglophile, and I do not know more than the basics of the British system of politics.

I know that Gordon Brown is the leader of the Labour Party, and that people of Britain vote for political parties rather than people. I know that Britain must hold its next general election in the next 12 months.

I do not know under what conditions the Labor Party can toss out its leader.

Here's my guesses:

1. Gordon Brown is not about to retire his Prime Minister post on his own. If he were, then he would have already.

2. If Labour had a strong, charismatic candidate in the wings, people would have already been drawn to him or her. I don't hear about one. (That doesn't mean that one doesn't exist.) Therefore, my guess is that Labour doesn't have a strong candidate to replace Brown.

3. Therefore, my final guess is that Gordon Brown will stand for the next general election, will lose, and David Cameron (of the Conservative Party) will be the next Prime Minister.

It's starting to look like it'll be a lot sooner than later. I would bet that it won't be a case of Brown stepping down but calling a GE.

Tbh I'm.. well, not looking forward to it exactly but wishing they'd just hurry up and get to it. I want to get it over with, like having a tooth pulled out.

I don't. I wouldn't want the fekking Tories in power even if they promise to repeal the Patriot Act and cancel ID cards.

I suspect a better pool would be based on the number of days he has left, whether terminated by his own voluntary exit or a vote of no confidence.

There is the possibility that he may somehow pull his gonads out of the fire. Politics makes strange bedfellows and drama, sometimes.

He'll hold on until next spring. I'm taking bets if anyone wants to lose their money.
